Why Buy Canon EF 70-200mm f2.8L USM Lens?

Review of Canon EF 70-200mm f2.8L USM Lens*

THE BEST VALUE IN GLASS OUT THERE! This has got to be one of the best lenses in this price category! I have owned both the 70-200 2.8 II is and now the non-is version and I have been impressed with both on my 5D Mk2. I sold off my IS version a few years ago when careers changed and I felt like it was too much money to have sitting around in a bag hardly being used. Now things have changed and it was time for another long lens, and of course I spent many late nights reading reviews trying to justify the 1000+ bump to IS, or trying to convince myself that this was the way to go. I really feel like this was the right call and I have zero regrets. The key to using this lens, handheld or otherwise, is nothing new, you need to shoot with proper technique. Shutter speeds above 1/320, proper support of the lens while shooting, proper breathing technique, bump your iso if the camera can handle it, and overall common sense, if you can use a set of sticks go for it but it is by no means necessary. Obviously this lens is built like a tank and will take its toll on you lugging it around all day, you can eliminate some of that strain with a proper shoulder strap. I know when I bought the IS version a few years ago I loved it and I think I spent too much time on the internet listing to people tell me its a must have, well its not. Harkin back to the ‘”olden days” of film and long lens photography, we did not need Photoshop, we did not need IS or VR, we needed good camera technique to lock down a great shot. Buy this lens and practice, it will make you a better photographer. Just my 2 cents. (Aug 2013)
Best 70-200 available for the price  I laugh when I hear comments like you have to have the IS version of this lens. With todays high ISO performance with virtually all DSLR’s, I.S. just not needed. I would recommend this lens to anyone who is serious about photography and make sure you find the light. Here’s a sample of such a photograph with this incredible lens. (April 2015)

As expected…an amazing lens! My low light shooting is limited so I didn’t order the IS version. The first thing I did though was to take some pictures, hand held, of my dogs in a dimly lit room. I could hardly believe how amazing the pictures came out. Next shoot was from my kayak, again amazing results. A very sharp lens, high quality construction and the weight is not an issue for me compared to my older Sigma 80-400 monster.Great price and great service from B&H, love the free expidited shipping!
