The announcement on 21 March of the launch of the Canon Rebel T5i (called Canon 700D outside of North America) was a surprise to most as it was only last year that we saw the Canon Rebel T4i (Canon 650D) come to the market. This new model has all the features of the Canon Rebel T4i with only a few extras… a 360 degree rotating Mode Dial, a series of Creative Filters that can be used when shooting in Live View and an Improved Casing to give the camera a more upmarket look.
So why go to the expense of a new launch with so few enhancements? Many believe that it was to highlight the new range of STM lenses. STM lenses use new Stepping Motor Technology which provides quiet and fast focusing which is particularly useful when used on the new Rebel T5i and Rebel SL1 and the Rebel T4i which have Hybrid Auto Focus that tracks moving objects.
There are now three STM lenses in the range the EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM, the EF 40mm f/2.8 STM “pancake” lens and the new EF-S 18-55mm lens. The EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens is a lightweight EF-S standard zoom lens with an optical image stabilizer for up to four stops for shake correction. It will focus as close as 10inches (0.25m) and as a result of a new internal focusing system that is contained with the lens barrel, the lens does not extend when focusing. More detail can be found at Canon.com
The new Canon Rebel T5i / Canon 700D can be purchased as Body Only, or combined with the EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM or EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens.
The release in North America is due April 30.

We all know that those in the Far East love a gamble… Even the release of a Canon 7D mark II is a recent topic that is causing serious speculation. A Japanese magazine “Impress” recently published the predicated probability of the release of this upgrade to the 7D … not unreasonable since that model was announced over 3 years ago. They predict an 85% likelihood which tops 70% for a Canon EOS70D. Being closer than most to HQ perhaps thre is some truth in it. As regards spec for this upgrade we read of 10fps and a sensor of up to 25MP. Personally, I hope they surprise us with a built in wireless transmitter as per the 6D as it would be great for sports photography… it is really frustrating to have to acquire a new separate wireless unit each time you upgrade.
Very efficiently Canon have made the User Instructions for the new Canon 6D available for download. Two version are available one for the camera complete with WiFi and GPS (WG) the other for sraight Full Frame Camera (N) Curiious…..From the Canon site:

Well guys and gals the Canon 6D has arrived and it’s available to order for shipment worldwide and for FREE too. We have been diligently exploring the world knowing so many of you wanted the exciting news as to when the Canon 6D was finally going to be released. Today we received the news we had been hoping for with an email from DigitalRev to say it’s now listed in their store and they will be starting their full on sales campaign tomorrow with shipment due to start around Saturday or Monday. For those of you that have not heard of DigitalRev , we stumbled upon them a couple of months ago and have purchased two camera bodies. Saved lots of List Price which was great, Duty was Pre-Paid and what an impressive service too… ordered on Sunday and delivered by courier on Wednesday. Oh and a full worldwide warranty too. It was as easy as ordering locally – the world is getting smaller. Do you want to be one of the first to try out this Full Frame DSLR with built in WiFi? That last element is very exciting…. we can’t wait to put it through its paces which could be as soon as next Wednesday
Guess to learn on Thursday from Canon Europe that the 6d has been released there, if only in small numbers, comes as no surprise as that’s HQ. However, surprised that one major Japnese retailer Yodobashi only has it on preorder. Canon Europe said that we should expect release elsewhere in December which is no real surprise.
There is talk on the street that an upgrade of the Canon 7D is to hit the streets in early 2013. Nothing was revealed at Photokina but…. It is suggested that it will see an increase frame rate from 8 to 10 fps plus an APS-C sensor of “no more” than 25MP.
With a potential $15,000 price tag it should be everything in one unit. With it’s still and hi end video capability not sure it will be something everyone aspires to getting. There will of course be those that just upgrade at each new model release and to hell with the expense. For us photographers I think many will give it a miss as Canon US themselves promote it under Cinema EOS Cameras – of course they also promote that it retains the exceptional still camera performance of its EOS-1D X sister camera so perhaps many will be tempted. Like the Canon EOS 6D though a release date is vague. I trawled the first couple of pages on Google and decided that info is pure speculation.
So when can we all get our hands on the new entry level Full Frame Canon 6D? Opinions differ if you Google it with many claiming a release in the US of October 2012. Well we’re now in November…. B&H Photo in New York “estimate” December 10th. That’s their guess, hope, Promise? as Amazon US merely quote “Order now and we’ll deliver when available”. Amazon UK are more committed but 1st March 2013 will disappoint so many. Amazon Japan promise 31st December and that should be write as that’s HQ. All this uncertainty makes preordering pretty precarious So how much can you expect to pay for you taste of full frame photography B&H in NewYork quote $2,099 as do Amazon US . In the UK Amazon quote £1,799 which converts to a huge $2,800 🙁 so guess they will be importing
